What to wear to Cheltenham Races! Two outfits perfect for the upcoming National Hunt season!

Hello my darlings! Welcome back to a very autumnal blog, and what is the start of the Cheltenham Races jump season!

For those of you who are new to the sport, National Hunt racing, commonly known as jump racing, is a type of horse racing where horses compete over a course that includes fences, or hurdles. This style of racing is different from flat racing, and tests both jumping ability and endurance.

There are two main types of National Hunt racing: hurdles, which involve those lower obstacles, and steeplechases, which feature the larger, more solid looking fences. The sport is especially popular during winter months, with many of its most prestigious events, such as the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National, attracting top horses, jockeys, and trainers!

Fashion and style are key to the experience at race days, where spectators embrace country style and fashion throughout their attire. Unlike the more formal and summery styles seen at flat racing throughout the warmer months, winter jump racing fashion leans towards sophistication and practicality, blending warmth with style.

Tweed, tailored suits, cosy jumper dresses, and practical footwear are the most popular choices, often paired with statement accessories like fedora hats, fascinators, scarves and gloves. Bold, classic colors such as deep greens, plums, browns and navy dominate, reflecting the season and the countryside setting.

Dressing for the weather is key during these winter racing months. Layers are essentials, along with footwear suitable for standing all day, as well as some mud or rain! Trench coats, capes and blazers are a popular choice, alongside trousers or tweed skirts, and finishing with leather or suede boots.

My outfits from The Showcase

Last week welcomed the first day of many at Cheltenham Racecourse for this season, The Showcase. The Showcase always falls in October, and welcomes National Hunt racing to Cheltenham for the season, which then ends in May.

As always, style and warmth is on the mind of those attending. As a member of the racecourse, I went for both days of the meet, you can find details of my outfits below.

🍃 Outfit One 🍃

Day one of the two day meeting incorporated the gorgeous earthy shades of green to complete an autumnal look. This gorgeous green shade mixed with a light cream foundation comprising of a simple roll neck jumper and tweed skirt makes for a really simple but elegant National Hunt outfit.

Steal my style:

Fedora | Joules

Fur scarf | Unknown (vintage piece)

Scarf tassel | That Scarf

Cape | Hunt & Hall

Roll neck | Schoffel Country

Skirt | Shein

Bag/Boots/Belt | Fairfax & Favor

🍂 Outfit Two 🍂

Warm, rich tones were the theme for day two. I have been loving the colourway ‘plum’ ever since Fairfax & Favor launched this as their colour of the season last year. It’s a really easy colour to colour match with. I have gone for another ready to recreate look, simply using a tweed skirt and jumper, mixed with a statement coat and accessories!

Steal my style:

Fedora | Josephine’s Country Collection

Jumper | Primark

Belt | Mackenzie & George

Skirt | Shein

Coat/Boots | Fairfax & Favor

Bag | Barkworth Reeve

Twilly | Clare Haggas

From both my outfits, you can see I’ve used a really mix of brands both budget and luxury, to achieve a polished overall look! I’d love to know which was your favourite! And I cannot wait to share with you my upcoming November meet outfits!

That’s all for now!

See you in the next blog!

Lots of love, Lucinda xo
