The 2023 Country Girls Event Guide … as told by your favourite instagrammers!
It won’t be long until the nights will be edging lighter, and the thought of show season will be just around the corner. I have a huge obsession with the show circuit, having worked it for many years, and enjoyed attending whenever else. I have been to so many events I’ve lost count, but when it comes to Country shows, I know a thing or two about the events out there, as do some of my lovely fellow Instagrammers.
I’ve teamed up with some of the gorgeous girls you’ll follow online, to bring you the Ultimate show guide for the upcoming 2023 year.
So whether you have no idea where to attend, what to take, or what the best bits are, grab a drink and settle in – we’ve got you!

Cheltenham Festival – 14th – 17th March 2023
Why did you pick this event?
Cheltenham Festival is known by all, whether you are completely horse obsessed, or have never ridden in your life. This mega event brings so many together to create an atmosphere like no other.
What’s your favourite part of the event?
The atmosphere is unparalleled to anything else I have ever experienced. You cannot beat The Cheltenham ‘Roar’.
What outfit would you recommend?
If there is one thing I know and understand, it’s National Hunt Racing outfits. For me, the thing I love about Cheltenham is that there is no dress code – you can quite literally wear what you feel comfortable in. So whether it’s opting for your favourite dress and heels on Ladies Day, or keeping it chic in some classic tweed – you will always fit in!
My personal recommendation is some tall boots, a tweed skirt, roll neck jumper, a long line jacket and a statement hat or fascinator.
What’s your one ‘desert island’ essential for taking to the event?
Comfortable shoes!! It’s a long day, outside, with very little seating. You are also likely to encounter gravel or grass at some point in the day. I just cannot help but speak from experience when I say there is NOTHING worse than shoes rubbing, it’s all you can think about, and it massively takes away from the day. Don’t wait for the day to break your shoes in!
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend?
Book early to avoid rising ticket prices. Plan ahead, know how you are getting there, what you want to do, and have a plan for the evening. Know your ticket enclosures – check what you have access to with each enclosure in advance to avoid any disappointment on the day!
P.S. …as it’s a New Year – let us in on one of your New Year’s resolutions!
Embrace change and opportunity. The ability to adapt is imperative, and change is something I always shy away from. I am looking to try and make a conscious effort to embrace it more this year, and welcome opportunities which come my way.

The Randox Grand National – 13th – 15th April 2023
Why did you pick this event?
I am not sure how this is still one meet I am yet to attend, but I urge that if you have the chance to go, you take it!! Having friends that have attended and thoroughly enjoyed their day, it is an event I am trying to find a way to attend.
What’s your favourite part of the event?
This is one of the most well known race meets, and even if you know nothing about horses, or don’t even like them – you have probably heard of the Grand National. I love having an event so well known that it brings together those without a passion of equestrianism as much as it does those who do.
What outfit would you recommend?
This Aintree meet is all out!
What’s your one ‘desert island’ essential for taking to the event?
With any race day it just has to be …
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend?
Plan ahead.

Badminton Horse Trials – 4th – 8th May 2023
Why did you pick this event?
This was actually my first time attending Badminton and my first event I’ve ever been to. As it was my first event I knew I had to pick a good one and what’s better than cross country day at Badminton?!
What’s your favourite part of the event?
It definitely has to be walking the course! The course at Badminton is one of the best for a reason so make the most of it. I love a bit of shopping too but Badminton is all about the world renowned horse trials so don’t miss out by spending most of the day in the shopping areas.
What outfit would you recommend?
I would recommend a casual but sporty outfit. Polos will be your best friend especially if it’s a warm one. As lovely as heeled boots and white dresses are this isn’t that kind of event. Comfortable footwear is an absolute must as you’ll be doing a lot more walking than you think (even if you’re not there on cross country day). I wore Reginas and I was perfectly fine but in hindsight it was too warm to be walking around in boots. Trainers, loafers or maybe even deck shoes will be my choice of footwear for my next Badminton.
What’s your one ‘desert island’ essential for taking to the event?
It may sound a bit silly but bring a bottle of water! This may go for every event but with the increase in the number of re-fill stations you’ll be hydrated and save some money if you bring a bottle. Also, buying a programme! Honestly it was such a lifesaver throughout the whole day. I’m not sure it it’ll be the same next year but you could only but these with cash so, make sure you bring some cash with you too.
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend?
This goes for most event but there’s hardly any phone signal if at all, especially if you’re going on the busiest day like cross country day. If you’re meeting people make sure you pre-organise somewhere to meet and a time.
Another tip is to walk the course backwards! There will be a number of people doing this but it’ll be far less than those who start at the beginning. Also take your time! You don’t have to rush around the course and you’ll have plenty of time to watch a couple of riders at each fence.
If you want a space by the lake get there as early as you can. This is a premium area and the space is limited.
P.S. …as it’s a New Year – let us in on one of your New Year’s resolutions!
Saying yes to doing more new things! We all get a bit of FOMO but 2023 will be the year of getting out there and looking for new events and new places to explore.

Royal Windsor Horse Show – 11th – 14th May 2023
Why did you pick your event?
I’ve been to Royal Windsor a few times now, and hosting International Competition, it has all the thrills and spills of Equestrian sport. With a lot of history, and likes to the Royal family, Royal Windsor Horse Show is really unique!
What’s your favourite part of the event?
With Windsor Castle as the backdrop to the event, it has such a special feel! I think this year will be an emotional one too!.
What outfit would you recommend?
Let’s be honest …. May in England – it’s likely to rain! I would suggest absolutely dressing for the weather! It is an outdoor Equestrian event – so come prepared. It’s likely you may even need wellies!
What’s your one ‘desert island’ essential for taking to the event?
WELLIES! Even if they are just in the car – you have a back up! An umbrella is probably a good idea too!
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend the event?
Make sure you have planned getting to the event and have any back up options (e.g if you’re relying on trains and hear there is likely to be strikes!)

Royal Bath & West Show – 1st – 3rd June 2023
Why did you pick your event?
This is such a nice show, perfect for a family day out at the weekend. There’s loads of shopping and always an action packed exciting timetable.
What’s your favourite part of the event?
I always love the livestock parade! Also, the fact it’s the middle of Summer, the sun is shining, you’ve got a local cider in hand – LIFE JUST FEELS GOOD! You know the scene I’m imagining!
What outfit would you recommend?
A little white dress! Easily my go to Summer show outfit! Something lightweight and airy! I love knee high boots with a Summer dress – but depending on our June – sandals, loafers or deck shoes are always likely more appropriate! I also recommend a lightweight summer fedora! There’s loads on the market now – mine is from Hortons England.
What’s your one desert island essential for taking to the event?
Sun cream!!! Do not get caught out at these Summer shows without it. You can get really easy transparent spray suncreams which are non greasy, and you can really easily top up on throughout the day.
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend the event?
Look out for the local beverages – and the CHEESE!

Royal Ascot – 20th – 24th June 2023
Why did you pick your event?
I am a National Hunt girl through and through, I don’t even pretend to know anything about Flat Racing, HOWEVER – Royal Ascot is something else – and it is something you HAVE to experience!
What’s your favourite part of the event?
Ascot racecourse is absolutely beautiful, it is immaculately kept and has such a luxurious feel to it. It’s the perfect opportunity to get dressed up, drink Pimms, and enjoy top class racing!
What outfit would you recommend?
Royal Ascot has a strict dress code depending on the enclosure tickets that you have – so make sure you check the requirements in relation to your ticket type. This is very much a dress, heels and hat event! If you aren’t sure where to start looking, I recommend Phase Eight, Ted Baker, Oasis, Coast and Karen Millen.
What’s your one desert island essential for taking to the event?
Plasters! If you are wearing heels all day, yourself – or someone you know, is likely to need them! There is nothing more uncomfortable than rubbing shoes – come prepared!
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend the event?
Make sure you have double checked the enclosure dress code!

Royal Norfolk Show – 28th – 29th June 2023
Why did you pick your event?
I have attended the Royal Norfolk Show for many years and it is always a lovely highlight of the year. It has such a wide array of things to do and see, from the Royal visit to the machinery stands, as well as the amazing shopping and equine events.
What’s your favourite part of the event?
Definitely the shopping and food hall! There are so many great shopping stands and such incredible local food and drink to try.
What outfit would you recommend?
Over the years I have experienced days at the event with glorious sunshine and, other times, torrential rain. But, whatever the weather, you need comfortable footwear as you will be doing so much walking! A lot of people opt for wellies, deck shoes, or boots, such as Fairfax & Favor Explorers or Dubarry Galway’s boots, which are all great options.
What’s your one desert island essential for taking to the event?
A roomy handbag – you will definitely be buying more than you think!
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend the event?
Arrive early! It gets really busy and the queues can get quite long – if you want to make the most of the day and have time to see everything then you’ll need to be prepared and get there early.
Ps… as it’s New Year – let us in on one of your News Year’s resolutions!
I’m going to take more time to enjoy the simple things in life. I think we can all quite easily get wrapped up in our lives with work, daily life and worries! But I want to take some time out of each day to notice all of the simple things and take the time to enjoy them ☺️
And perhaps eat less chocolate, but I’m not too sure I can keep that one 😉

Scottish Game Fair – 30th Jun – 2nd July 2023
Why did you pick your event?
I have been going to the Scottish Game fair since I was wee, so it has been an annual event for our family for years. It’s a fantastic event for the Scottish Country Community but it’s also an opportunity for us to catch up with our friends. Scone Palace is a beautiful venue with all of the perfect ingredients for the perfect day out – country sports, foods, dogs and fashion.
What’s your favourite part of the event?
I’m completely dog obsessed so I love all of the gun dog trials, especially the scurry. The 2022 Scottish Game Fair was the pups first – it was perfect getting used to all the new smells and sounds.
Jamie loves participating in the fishing competitions. We are both also total foodies, so we love trying loads of new tasty treats – we had some smoked venison this year which was unbelievable.
What outfit would you recommend?
For me it’s a Hicks and Brown Suffolk Fedora Hat, Schoffel Shirt and Gilet, Vantage Atelier Tweed Skirt and Leather Belt and either some Fairfax Explorers or Dubarry Gallway Boots. Our Le Chameau’s are always in the car in case the rain takes a turn and of course a splash of Clare Haggas on my bag and neck!!
What’s your one ‘desert Island’ essential for taking to the event?
Picnic Basket with some Champagne and snacks and an umbrella…. Just in case, after all it is Scotland.
P.s … as it’s a New Year – let us in on one of your New Year’s resolutions!
Balance – modern day life can be busy for us all. I would like to be better at managing and protecting my energy this year, knowing when to stop, to commit to self care and introverting and not feeling guilty about it. I’m a busy bee by nature but I am keen to learn to read and say no at times so I avoid burning myself out – something that is so important for us all to think about as our lives get increasingly hectic.

Great Yorkshire Show – 11th – 14th July 2023
Why did you pick your event?
I picked this event, as I find it such a feel good show. Being a Yorkshire lass, it’s the highlight of the year in the show calendar for me and I haven’t missed it for 11 years. 3, now four days of country life, fashion, animals and classes with the added bonus of socialising, live music, an amazing beer tent and amazing shopping. As it is held in mid July, traditionally (touch wood!) it is always good weather making it even more enjoyable! There is something for everyone to see, even if you’re not interested in country pursuits it’s still an amazing day out!
What’s your favourite part of the event?
It’s hard to pick a favourite part as I love the whole show, but I do enjoy watching both the equestrian and livestock showing classes. There are some fantastic animals there which is a pleasure to see. I’ve shown sheep and horses, but I would love to show a cow one year.
What outfit would you recommend?
With it been July, it’s essential to make sure you’re dressed for the warmer weather. The Yorkshire show also involves walking, which means comfy boots are a necessity (Fairfax & Favor for me of course!) as you can easily rack up miles of walking a day should you want to see the whole show, so the last thing you want is uncomfortable shoes. GYS have multiple flower boards / feature areas great for content snaps.
My usual outfit consists of items such as the below-
My boots will be the mid heel suede in tan with tassels to match the rest of my outfit.
A tweed skirt, I usually wear Holland Cooper / Maude fox.
Either a light, comfortable flowy blouse or a nice vest top depending on the forecast. (Holland cooper vest top, Eton Taylor blouse style)
A fedora with feature head piece to tie in the look and protect your head from the sunshine.
Weather dependant, a schoffel gilet or matching tweed jacket.
Accessories-
Hi ho silver jewellery, my favourite is the cherry roller snaffle range and Fairfax & favor range.
Fairfax & favor belt in tan to match the boots
Fairfax & Favor bag- Langley, Windsor or Finsbury size.
Holland cooper sunglasses.
What’s your one ‘desert Island’ essential for taking to the event?
My desert island item would definitely be a good sized handbag! Whether you go to stay over at the Yorkshire, or travel in by day, as previously mentioned there is a lot to do and a lot of walking!
A decent sized handbag where you can pop your purse, a bottle of water, sunglasses, makeup and hairbrush. As there is a variety of shops, ranging from food/drink, country clothing/accessories, homeware, toys, pet items and much more, the last thing you want to be doing is multiple trips to the car or baggage drop. Some stands will hold items for you till the end of the day and the Yorkshire do offer a baggage drop, however I tend to find myself too busy enjoying the show to be going back and forth!
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend?
– If you can attend for more than one day, do it. This will allow you to see more of the show in-depth without feeling rushed. (This also means you can wear multiple outfits!)
– If you can’t- have a look at the showground map and timetables to make sure you don’t miss anything you want to see.
– Wednesday is a good day to attend.
– Follow the brands you want to see on instagram / social media- they will post the avenues and stand numbers to find them.
– If you are a livestock / equine competitor- it is worth going even if the judges aren’t for you, the atmosphere and experience is brilliant.
– Go to the black sheep bar for a soft or alcoholic beverage the live music is on multiple times a day and is brilliant, which reflects the atmosphere.
– There are no dogs allowed, except guide, not even in the car park / camping so don’t bring your dog!
– Buy your tickets early, the days may be capped on attendance as in previous years, they sell out fast and you don’t want to miss out!
P.s … as it’s a New Year – let us in on one of your New Year’s resolutions!
I’m starting a new job in the new year, which is a new challenge where I have a lot to learn. I am determined to be successful in this new role, but I want to use this drive in my social media work too, as I would like to work with more brands for 2023 and make my content even better!

The Game Fair – 28th – 30th July 2023
Why did you pick your event?
From my experience, this event has the most positive and social atmosphere. No one is in a particular rush to get anywhere, there are as many competitions as Burghley or The Royal Highland Show for example, so there is no aura of stress, anxiety or peer rivalry, and the show is incredibly well laid out. Parking is accessible and simple, the stands are grouped together in what they are exhibiting or selling, and there are multiple ablution facilities so you’re never too far away.
What’s your favourite part of the event?
I am a very sociable person so for me, my favourite part is the sheer magnitude of people that attend the event and getting to catch up with people I haven’t seen in a long time, or meet people in person I have connected with online. I obviously live quite far North, so attending events local to others is so much more rewarding than events local to me.
What outfit would you recommend?
Layers!! From scorching days to extreme downpours, you can honestly expect any weather at this event. I would recommend a comfortable tweed skirt with a nice frilly blouse (I love the Eton Taylor blouses) a Hicks and Brown hat because, well you rarely see me without headwear, and ofcourse a pair of Fairfax and Favor boots of your choice. But then bring with you a Schoffel, a tweed or wax jacket, and an umbrella if you can!
What’s your one ‘desert Island’ essential for taking to the event?
Lipstick. The amount of photos you find yourself in… wow! And my mum has always said to me, “Lipstick is a must! It is like wearing a bra.” So yea, wear one of those too haha.
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend?
Book your accommodation early! In fact, I am already behind – everyone I know has already booked theirs. You have no idea how many people travel to this event and local accommodation fills up FAST.
P.s … as it’s a New Year – let us in on one of your New Year’s resolutions!
Oh my goodness, I haven’t even thought about this yet. This year, halfway through the year, I decided it would be a ‘YES’ year. I would accept invites to shows and photoshoots and make more effort to attend more happening down South, and it was incredible! So perhaps I will start the year with the intention of making more trips South. If not for photoshoots and shows, then to visit the friends I have made and family in London.

Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials – 31st Aug – 3rd Sept 2023
Why did you pick this event?
Burghley was the first show I ever went to back in 2015 and I loved it! I’ve always been a horsey girl and Burghley perfectly combines my love of horses with the countryside, fashion and all my favourite brands! Not only is it a great day out, I also feel like Burghley is the finale of the summer shows so it’s one not to miss!
What’s your favourite part of the event?
I can’t pick just one favourite part! Of course the cross country definitely is a big WOW but I also love watching the show jumping and seeing so many familiar faces 🥰
What outfit would you recommend?
This is a tricky one, it entirely depends on the day and the weather! The weather was amazing for Burghley 2022 so for cross country day definitely something comfy so you can walk the course and perhaps something with layers you can take off. The show jumping day is more chilled out, you could be sitting in the grandstand or on the grass watching the big screen. I went for boat shoes, a denim skirt and a little knitted top and cardigan combo for comfort and a layer I can take off!
What’s your one ‘desert island’ essential for taking to the event
My desert island essential would be water / a fully charged phone for all the pics you’re definitely going to be taking!
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend?
Go for more than one day!! Burghley is in my opinion the best one of the year, so book those tickets! Go for comfort, bring your friends and do plenty of shopping!
Watch the ponies too, they are so much fun!
P.s … as it’s a New Year – let us in on one of your New Year’s resolutions!
This one took me a while to think of but I think my New Year’s Resolution would be to worry less about things I can’t control!

Horse of the Year Show – 4th – 8th October 2023
Why did you pick this event?
In true Equestrian style, if you know you know! This is a fantastic event and offers so much to enjoy as we start to come out of the Summer Show Season. Slightly more of an Equestrian specific event to some of the other equine events mentioned, but it’s a great one.
What’s your favourite part of the event?
There is always an action packed timetable, with lots of variety.
What outfit would you recommend?
Held at The NEC in Birmingham, this is an indoor event, with no specific dress code, so you really can wear whatever is comfortable. I wouldn’t typically dress up for this show – just causal, comfortable normal clothing!
What’s your one ‘desert island’ essential for taking to the event?
With it being an indoor show, you can’t go too far wrong with this one!
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend?
If you’re making full use of the shopping, and have bulky items – don’t forget there is a bag drop, so you don’t need to head back to try and find your car inbetween!

Cheltenham Races November Meet – 17th – 19th November 2023
Why did you pick this event?
Who doesn’t love some horse racing with country fashion?! This event is the perfect start to the winter season. Get your best hat and trench coat out because it’s time to own the stands.
What’s your favourite part of the event?
The atmosphere is the best one going out of all the events I attended in 2022. There’s a constant buzz that runs through the crowds in the lead up to a race. When each race is in its final stages there’s nothing like the stands erupting into roars and cheers.
What outfit would you recommend?
Something fabulous! You need an outfit that stands out from the crowd. I saw a lot of green and brown this year so I would definitely try and add a pop of colour to your outfit if you can. If you are dressing ing more natural colours I would recommend a big feather pin to make you stand out from the crowd.
What’s your one ‘desert island’ essential for taking to the event?
A taxi reservation! It’s not exactly an essential that you can physically take with you but book your taxis well in advance. We made the mistake of booking one on the day and after waiting for 30 minutes for a taxi that wasn’t coming we admitted defeat and started to walk home. It was a hilarious walk home but I’m pretty sure we could’ve done with a comfortable taxi ride home rather than staggering home in heeled boots and bare foot.
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend?
If you’re not into betting and horse racing before you go but want to give it a go do a little bit of research. You can get caught up in the moment and want to put your money on everything and anything.
P.S. …as it’s a New Year – let us in on one of your New Year’s resolutions!
Saying yes to doing more new things! We all get a bit of FOMO but 2023 will be the year of getting out there and looking for new events and new places to explore.

London Horse Show – 14th – 18th December 2023
Why did you pick this event?
To most Equestrians, London Horse Show (formally Olympia) is the moment when you go ‘Ok, it’s really Christmas now’. The event has such a special atmosphere, always running right in the lead up to Christmas, and with FEI World Cup qualifiers for Dressage, Show Jumping and Driving, it’s no wonder it draws such a crowd.
What’s your favourite part of the event?
There is something for everyone here, even if you’re dragging along a ‘non horsey’ partner for example! From The Devils Horseman to The Shetland pony Grand National to World Class Competition – all whilst sipping on a Mulled Wine and Christmas shopping – there isn’t anything else like it!
What outfit would you recommend?
This is an indoor event, so you really can wear what you like. If you are watching the performances, then there is a lot of sitting down, so be mindful to wear something comfortable for that! I usually just wear a dress and boots or jeans and loafers – there’s definitely no dress code!
What’s your one ‘desert island’ essential for taking to the event?
Pick n Mix! I really wish I could write something else here – but my overwhelming thought when I was thinking of this show was the joy I get from demolishing a whole bag throughout the performances. If you don’t take anything with you – there’s a great stand there! It’s an essential!
Any top tips for anyone looking to attend?
– Book ahead of time so that you can get into the performance day and time that you would like.
– If you live a little further afield from London, turn it into a Christmas weekend and stay over. See the Christmas lights in London and get some more Christmas shopping done before heading home.

So there we have it – a guide to some of the must visit events this year, as told by myself, and some fellow Instagrammers! We are so lucky in the UK to have such a fantastic show season, so don’t forget it’s not limited to those mentioned above – you could get to a show pretty much every weekend if you wanted to!
I can’t wait to enjoy the show season again this year.
See you soon!
