I’m so excited that I have a slightly different blog today! A brand spotlight with no other than award winning footwear company, Nicola Sexton.

This glamorous mother daughter duo are the friendliest on the show circuit, and with their stunningly unique designs, and passion for high-end product, it’s no wonder their footwear is so highly sort after.

Whether it’s a special occasion, day at the races or every day office wear, there’s something for everyone in their collection. I’ve been a huge fan for a long time now, and I love seeing the ladies during show season!

Please could you start by introducing yourselves?

I’m (Nicola) Mother and I’m (Charlie) daughter, and together we run our award-winning footwear company, Nicola Sexton.

What was it that inspired Nicola Sexton?

A love of shoes of course! The Nicola Sexton collection was initially born to sit alongside other high-end dedicant Italian brands in Nicola’s boutique. Nicola soon realised that there was a gap in the market for an everyday, more wearable shoe, but still providing the “wow” factor to set it apart from the many other brands found on the high street. The result is a collection of timeless designs with a modern twist, with quality, craftsmanship, design, and comfort at the heart of the brand’s DNA.

That’s amazing, what a great story. Now, I know you’re a mother daughter duo, do you often face conflicting views or are things pretty plain sailing between you in business?

We get asked this question a lot! We both have a clear vision of our aspirations for the brand, and we are usually in agreement. We also know our own strengths and weaknesses and therefore have defined roles within the company. After working together for so many years, we know exactly what the other is thinking and if we are feeling the pressure, we soon know how to laugh it off!

It sounds like you have a really great bond and know exactly how to work it within the business! So you’ll know I’m obsessed with the NS brand, can you share what makes Nicola Sexton unique?

You simply can’t find anything like it, all classic styles using eye catching materials and adornments that just aren’t available from any other footwear brand. Our Italian manufacture puts us ahead of the game in terms of quality and comfort.

What is your inspiration for the brand?

To keep providing our customers with the shoes they love! Customer service is really important to us and it’s imperative that we provide an enjoyable and professional shopping experience, whether that be face to face or online. Nicola Sexton footwear has become somewhat of a collector’s item, after your first pair, you just can’t stop!

With so many beautiful designs, do you have a favourite product from your collection?

Nicola – For me it’s the loafers – all of them. Having always been a high heel girl, if I’m wearing flats, they need to be exciting. Just because you’re in flats it doesn’t mean your footwear should go unnoticed.

Charlie – I feel the same way about our loafers, and I love how they appeal to any age range. If I’m getting ready to go out, I always plan my outfit around a fabulous pair of our shoes, I love the fact that I know no one else will have anything else quite like it!!

With that being said, which product is your best seller?

The Navy Velvet Loafer, which coincidently is the pair you have Lucinda! We have restocked continuously, but now for the very last time, to make way for its new counterpart coming very soon!

You’ve just launched your showroom haven’t you? Where can we find this and how can we make an appointment?

Our showroom is based just outside Newmarket. Whilst it is our working hub, we are very happy to entertain customers who would like to visit us and see where the design process starts! Details to make an appointment can be found on the homepage of our website.

That sounds so exciting, what a great next step to have taken! What do you love most about your job?

Charlie – For me, this question is easy. It’s the places it takes us, and the people we meet along the way. After two seasons on the show circuit, we have made some life-long friends. There’s also no better feeling than reconnecting with customers at the shows and seeing them rocking their NS goodies and hearing such wonderful feedback.

Nicola – The design process is what I love most….. and then the customers reaction once an idea becomes a reality!

Charlie, you mentioned the places it takes you, and I know it’s almost the start of show season now. With a jam packed calendar, what sort of events can we expect to see you at this year?

You can expect to see us at many prestigious events, kicking off next month with Cheltenham Festival. This year we have reduced the number of shows we will be exhibiting at, we are still a small team and as much as we love the show circuit, we need to remember to live too! We have therefore carefully picked 12 of our biggest and best shows for this year, and can’t wait for May, kicking off with two of our favourite events, Badminton Horse Trials & Royal Windsor Horse Show. With so many stunning and unique designs, how do you continue to stay creative?

The creativity and inspiration behind our designs starts with the materials. We source our leathers and materials from the largest sourcing show in Milan, once we have chosen our leathers, the design process just flows. It’s a really exciting part of the business, especially when we are waiting for the prototypes and samples to arrive.

Finally, any advice for someone dreaming of starting their own business or brand?

You must be passionate, love and believe in yourself and your product. Creating your own brand is not easy, from the idea to the design the manufacture, logistics and finally sale, it takes over your life. There is no such thing as a day off, but as the saying goes, if you find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life!

Charlie: Dim Sum
Nicola: Whilst on the show circuit, if I’m not on my stand you’ll find me with a hog roast, with of course apple sauce and crackling!!!

Charlie: Coffee, shoes & bedding
Nicola: Shoes & Jewellery

Best piece of advice?

Nicola – Always believe in yourself and follow your gut instinct.
Charlie – Don’t do anything in a rush!!
