3 neutral outfits to perfectly capture Burghley Horse Trials style!
Burghley Horse Trials Style
Burghley Horse Trials is running this year from 5th – 8th September 2024.
Known as the greatest CCI5* event, the excitement for Burghley Horse Trials is already beginning to build. This not to be missed event sees elite riders from around the world competing for the prestigious winning title. As one third of the Rolex Grand Slam, Burghley promises to deliver all of the thrills and spills of 5* eventing, combining challenging Dressage, Cross County and Showjumping phases. Whilst there is plenty to see and do over the duration of the event, I know the question on many of your minds will be… what to wear!
When it comes to Burghley Horse Trials, style and practicality walk hand in hand – think country chic with a dash of timeless elegance. Ladies, layers are going to be key, the weather in September is as unpredictable as can be! A few areas to focus your outfit planning around. Footwear – I cannot stress this enough, but pick something comfortable. There is no time for pain is beauty at these events. Dig out your comfiest boots, loafers or deck shoes as a starting point! When it comes to accessories, remember to plan for English weather. Hats, sunglasses and waterproofs are all absolutely not out of the question. Finally, when it comes to a bag, try and pick something with a cross body or shoulder option, to give your hands and arms a break. Try to opt for something mid sized if you can, big enough for what you need, but not too bulky.
I’ve put together 3 outfits within this blog to show you how I would consider styling some outfits for the event. At Burghley, the look you want to achieve is polished but never overdone β itβs about blending into the surroundings while standing out for all the right reasons!
Neutral Outfit Inspiration
Below you can find three neutral outfit ideas, to use as inspiration when planning your own styles! It is not that these outfits have to be copied exactly, nor do the same brands have to be used. But I hope these will show you three types of outfit styles which would be perfect for the event, even when made from pieces you already own!

Keep it classy, and dress to impress!
Should we be blessed with some good weather, you cannot go wrong with a flattering linen dress. This one from Schoffel country hangs beautifully and I also think dresses are a bit of a cheat, as it is less effort to put an outfit together, but they often look as though you have made a lot of effort. Navy can be much softer than Black to wear, with pale skintone like mine, often Navy looks more subtle and less harsh, if you haven’t tried this it is worth a go, and it is just as easy to wear!
I have opted to accessorise this with some simple Navy and Cream accessories. These help to evaluate the look and keep it classy, whilst brightening the outfit, which is great for the time of year.
I have tied in sunglasses with this look, but you could just as easily opt for a fedora hat to complete the look. Try a straw style if the weather looks to be better, or felt if the weather is heading more Autumnal! I have also added a silk scarf, which could be tied around the neck. This helps to go from wearing, to styling, and again ties in the Navy and cream.

Comfy casual, with a twist of Country Chic!
This is a great outfit for those transitional weather days. This is a newer rugby top from Joules, but I love the simple, elegant styling between the two tone colours. I have simply paired this with a pair of Navy Jeans – such a simple look, however the accessories can really bring this to life!
These Salthouse England loafers are incredibly comfortable, now I know everyone says that, but I have worked with Salthouse for quite a while now, so I have had many pairs of these loafers, and I can honestly say this. I took a brand new pair out of the box the day of The Game Fair, and wore them 12 hours straight. They didn’t rub, they weren’t uncomfortable. It is so important to wear shoes which will not rub or offer any discomfort during an event, and for me, these are the perfect loafers to opt for. They also have a lot of colourways to choose from.
With accessories for this outfit, I have kept along the Tan/Gold theming. The earrings, bracelet and watch all tie in the colours of the outfit, and the bag and belt from Fairfax & Favor add a really classy element to the outfit. I have again optimistically added sunglasses, but these could also be traded out for either a headband or fedora to complete the look!

Need for tweed! Classic country.
My final outfit for you is based off really classic country styling. I have gone for a light tweed blazer, this one if from Welligogs who do such beautifully tailored pieced. This is teamed quite simply with a white shirt with frill collar, and black jeans, this is a really basic outfit style.
I have then accessorised this up with a pair of investment suede boots from Fairfax & Favor, and a fedora from Hicks and Brown, I have finished off the outfit with a two-tone belt from Holland Cooper, and Bag from Grays 1922. This whole outfit is really simple to put together, but it looks so polished and classic.
